Officers, Directors, and Staff of Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation

The Board of Directors of Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation is comprised of a variety of community leaders with a wealth of experience in non-profit governance and in their respective professional disciplines. They lead the Foundation’s various committees in its support of community healthcare programs, fulfillment of our equipment funding goals, and in physician recruitment and retention. Our dedication and efforts are focused on one thing: improving the health and lives of the 22,200 residents in our hospital’s catchment area.

Don Hyslop, the Foundation Chair, is originally from New Brunswick, is a retired educator, and has lived in the Kingston/Greenwood area for over 40 years. Don has volunteered his time and efforts for several organizations over the years and has twice received Volunteer of the Year Awards. In 2002 he was awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. Now, Don brings his unbridled enthusiasm to the Foundation in his role as Community Navigator for the Mid Valley Region Physician Recruitment & Retention Committee.

Anne Crowell, MT, is the Foundation’s Vice-Chair.  Anne runs her Massage Therapy Clinic in Middleton and is a Director with the Massage Therapists’ Association of Nova Scotia. In addition to healthcare being her vocation, Anne has been volunteering in the sector for many years.  A result-oriented performer with seemingly unlimited energy, Anne is a founding member and Vice Chair of the Mid Valley Region Physician Recruitment & Retention Committee; Vice Chair and Secretary/Treasurer for the Annapolis County Active Kids Healthy Kids Society; and holds a seat on the Annapolis Community Health Board.

Susan Howell, the Foundation’s Treasurer, is a military member with the rank of Warrant Officer and acts as the Deputy Communications Officer at 14 Wing Greenwood. Susan has long been a supporter of the Foundation financially and has served as a director and member of the Communications Committee before assuming the role of Treasurer. She joined the Board in February 2023.

Linda Baltzer is the Secretary of the Foundation. In addition to being President of the Middleton and District Lions Club, Linda is well known in Lions for her dedication to its motto, “We Serve”. She has held the position of President for three terms, has acted as Lions Zone Chair for Annapolis and Digby Counties for three years, and is presently serving a four-year term with The Lions Foundation of Canada. At the Provincial level, she is the Chair and Funding Coordinator for Guide Dogs. Girl Guides has also always been close to Linda’s heart and over the years she has been a Group Leader and Regional Coordinator at both the local and provincial levels. She was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in Annapolis County in 2022. Linda joined the Board in February 2024.

To support the work of the Directors, the Foundation has two part-time staff members. Office Administrator, Leanne St. Louis, has over 20 years of administrative experience and a strong background in finance and project management. She joined the Foundation in January 2024 to replace Michael Fairn, who has been with the Foundation since June 2021 and who was promoted to the role of Fund Development Coordinator. Michael is a seasoned sales, marketing, and management professional in the healthcare sector, has vast community service and Municipal Council experience, and has been a volunteer fundraiser in the past for various other organizations such as the local Rotary Club and the Canadian Cancer Society.
